Crafted 13x24 lathe

Post by Max_Simons »

Hi guys,

Does anybody hear run a Craftex metal lathe? I know they aren't the best quality, but it's what I've got and I have a few questions! HaHa

Craftex 13X24" lathe . Have you been able to search for other lathes of this size and provide a link to one similar? Some of us follow the styles and casting shapes of various Asian and other lathes.
I remember when I first heard "Toolmex" and thought it was from Mexico.

Max, I believe Craftex is a Busy Bee Tools brand. Busy Bee is the Canadian "Grizzly".
Including your location in your posting specs might help for future queries.

The issue that I am having with mine is that there seems to be excessive "ball slap" it the head stock.

Is this a gear head lathe? Growing Noise in the head stock usually means one or more of the gears that turns the spindle is worn. The teeth wear down and the gears Nash against each other due to excessive play - causing a lot of noise when you engage the drive chain. If you have a gear bath, you might drain and flush the headstock, get rid of accumulated metal shavings and old oil. Won't restore the gears, but might help it run quieter, and reduce rate of wear with fresh oil.

Or could be a bearing starting to go bad...

I found some pics of your CT 089 lathe at Photobucket. There may be some text but I was having some troubler with the site. The owner is murph 1411 and the link is: http://s397.photobucket.com/user/murph1 ... 5.jpg.html
Once the top of the head is removed, you can inspect each shaft for the issues mentioned. There may be some bearing "preload" required. Good luck and keep us posted.

You can look at the original manual for that lathe, with the exploded parts diagrams, at the Busy Bee site.
