My New Lathe.

Post by wm460 »

Call me patriotic but I have been after one of these lathes for years, they were build about approx 45 mins or so from my home town

Before I picked her up.

Well here is an updated photo of her new surroundings.
I haven't got room in my shed.

If the missus ain't happy kick her out and get a single bed. Then you'll have room for it. :)

Nice acquisition. What swing/length-BC is the lathe?

My misses fully supports my new shop and equipment.
She always knows where I am!

It is a HERCUS 260 .It is a different lathe than we see here. The cat's whisker or bee's knees, thousands miles away cool.

She has a 10 1/4" or 260 mm swing and 21" or 535 mm length.
The missus is OK now, just wasn't happy to find it sitting on the veranda

Does it not appear to be of two types? There is the sort of S.B. style mated with a later style head assembly. The tail and bed are unique to this. At 10" swing these would be very powerful lathes and perhaps why named Hurcus as in Hercules.

Hi There,

The Hercus started as a SBL clone (I believe they were licensed copies).
In later years, they enclosed the headstock and belt drive assembly and
made other improvements to the original SBL design. The apron and
tailstock retained their SBL look.

Good Luck!
