i just bought a very nice, great shape. Atlas 618 lathe.

That is probably the correct size, as I think the 12" came with 1/2 hp.

Any more than that and you will probably break something.

BTW, if you need documentation, look on vintagemachinery.org:

What Steve said. 1/4 hp is certainly adequate for the lathe. Although it may be a bit underpowered for your taste. You could easily put a new 1/2 HP or larger motor on with no issues, other than probably the bolt holes will be different, due to changes in the design of newer motor base plates. No big deal drill new holes...

The only thing that would happen with larger HP motor, might be the belts will stall and slip if the cutter digs in to deep into the work. You are not likely to break anything with belt drive lathes, and to much horsepower.

My memory is short, so I'm not sure that the 6 x 18 is a Craftsman model 109. If it is, exceeding the ¼ horse motor power is a sure recipe for a bent spindle.

If, on the other hand, the spindle has a 3/4" thread, you could get away with more hp---but it may not really be needed.

Don't ask.

I used to have a Craftsman 6x18 lathe.
It had a 1/4 HP motor which was completely adequate for anything I machined on it.

The 618 is made by Atlas and is essentially a miniature version of the 12" Atlas, minus the quick change gearbox.

The 109 is an entirely different animal, and was made by the Double A company (which I think stood for Ann Arbor)

This is a 109:

and this is a 618:

Yea, I've got a 1/2hp on my Atlas 618. Seems about the right power to me, but I'm sure it would be just fine with a 1/3hp. Then again, if all I had laying around was 1/4hp... I wouldn't hesitate running it with a 1/4hp. Nice lathe, but workhorse it is not.

Every-time I skim the threads to see what has changed I see this heading and read it 618 hp rather than what hp for 618. I then wonder what size shop tools needs a 618 hp machine. Sorry about the diversion but I've gone through this thinking about 3 times, always when I'm exhausted.

Yea, that's what I thought when I first saw it :-)

Me to. but, it's a great lead in! Don't we all dream of 618 HP lathes?
