Hi There,

Steve is correct. There will be numbers stamped on the
bearings (usually on the edge of the outer race). These
bearings appear to be New Departure type bearings. This
type of bearing is more difficult to locate but not impossible.
New Departure Bearing is out of business these days but the
type of bearing they made (where the inner race protrudes
farther out on one or both sides of the bearing when compared
to the outer race) are made by other manufacturers. It will
take some searching to get compatible bearings. I know Fafnir
and MRC bearing make some like this.

Good Luck!

Search ebay for 88504 comes up with more bearings than you will use in five lifetimes.

Hi There,

Obviously they are New Departure bearings. The 88000
series are the type with inner race protruding beyond the
outer race on both sides. As Steve pointed out, this size
bearing is available from many sources. Just make sure
they have the correct inner and outer race widths.

Good Luck!

Before I go any further with this, I'd like to let you guys know how much I appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge. I woke up this morning just thinking about how much I'm gonna miss working on this project with you guys over the next week. I'm leaving for Michigan on Thursday but will be back in Philly next Tuesday. Now back to business, Is the number 88504 a company serial number or is it a nation standard number used to describe critical demensions, material, style for all bearings and shared by all manufacturers in the U.S.?

Thanks, Doug.

Hi There,

the 88504 is the New Departure bearing number. In the 1940's
and 1950's, New Departure (ND for short) was a major bearing
supplier to American Industry and many manufacturers used
their bearings in the equipment they built.

There are industry standard bearing numbers used today but
because ND bearings were unique in their design, the ND number
has become the defacto standard for this type of bearing.

According to my ND manual (dated 1955), the bearing dimensions
are:

Bore = .7874" (20mm),
OD = 1.8504" (47mm),
Race Width (outer) = .551" (14mm),
Race Width (inner) = .6988", (17.8mm).

The industry standard 6204 bearing is very similar. Its dimensions
are:

Bore = 20mm,
OD = 47mm,
Width = 14mm.

As you can see, it is the same except for the wider inner race. If
there isn't a shoulder or other locating requirements that warrant
the need for the wider inner race, you may be able to substitute
the 6204 for the 88504. Alternatively, one could make spacers to
compensate for the more narrow inner race. But you will need a
working lathe to make the spacers.

In conclusion, 6204 bearings are cheaper but the 88504 type bearings
are available and if you shop around, you can find them without too
large an outlay of funds.

One comment: A dial caliper in not a precision enough measuring
tool for this kind of measurement but it will provide a 'ball park'
reference reading.

Good Luck!

The shaft is free. Feeling good about the decision to do this.

Thanks Blue Chips. I’ll be pulling out the micrometer when I get home.
