Holding a chuck in a collet?

Post by Water-mark »

I've aquired a smart and brown sabel lathe and it only comes with one back plate.
As it has an unusual nose thread (1.75 x 8tpi)and I'm not yet up to speed on thread cutting it leaves me in a bit of a bind.
Ultimately i'll make some more but in the mean time would it be outlandish to fit a collet chuck to the back plate and then turn plain spigot back plate and face plate to use temporarily?

If i make a back plate with a spigot instead of a threaded hole i can hold the spigot in a collet
Thereby allowing me to use both despite only having one threaded backplate.

My concern is that I'm getting away from the headstock.

I'm not following either.

If all you have is a collet, how do you plan to turn a backplate that will be held in the collet?

The resulting setup is likely to be chatter prone. Not saying it won't work, but I'd recommend it be used just long enough to create a proper setup, using it if necessary.
Rule of thumb (for me). Don't do temporary things. Once done, it's all too easy to simply go about life using them, when doing it right would have been so much better, and often not any more time consuming.

It's easy. Just keep your head clear. For right hand external threads, the compound should be set @ 5:00 (29° or 29½°). Feed with the compound, not the cross slide. Set your cross slide handle with zero on the mark and the handle @ 10:00, so when it's time to withdraw the tool and kick out the half nuts, it's an easy downhill push motion.

Until you're comfortable with threading, practice on plastic pipe. It's cheap, and forgiving. When you've mastered the art of sequencing, you should then practice on metal---which behaves considerably differently than plastic.

Luck! You can do it!

Thanks
I've got the machine home now and I've decided to do a full strip down and rebuild in fresh paint.
I also found two face plates and a catch plate so no rush to bodge anything now.
I'll still be making some back plates once it's up and running though.

The slots in my faceplates do that (or a chuck jaw in some setups).
