ABOM sized lathe

Post by SteveM »

If you haven't checked out Adam Booth's youtube channel, you should.

He does a lot of real-world repair and fabrication work, particularly large shafts for pumps, oilfield equipment and gearboxes.

I went to an industrial auction for a pump repair shop last week and found an ABOM-sized lathe.

It was listed as an "American", but maybe it's an Ameirican Pacemaker.

It was listed as a 48" lathe, but mistakenly listed as 20" between centers - it's 20 FEET.

Second that recommendation.

When I asked the rigger how they were going to move it, he said "VERY slowly".

It looked like the bed was all one piece.

In the late '80s a similarly sized lathe of Russian origin was moved out of a plant near to the one in which I was working. Out the door, the first thing encountered was a hump backed RR crossing. SLOWLY was the rule for sure, but it finally went on it's way via truck. Fascinating.
Contrary to what SHG says, I really like watching riggers.

Let me clarify. I hate watching riggers move things that belong to ME!

BTW, if that lathe doesn't look long enough for you, keep in mind that the tailstock is about six to eight FEET from the end of the bed!

While it's large, it's not really noteworthy. You want to see large? Take a look at this one:

Aren't aluminum streetlight poles turned in lathes?

Kinda reminds me of the aircraft carrier catapult planner I saw at Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Center in the 1980's
