SB Heavy 10 speed chart plate ?

Post by jcfx »

My buddy has a South Bend Heavy 10 that he recently replaced the hacked in motor with one that was the right speed
and I noticed that his SB doesn't have a speed chart plate that shows the belt positions for various speeds.
Was this normal and you had to reference the user manual for the belt positions ?

Some had them and some didn't, if I remember correctly.

Go to wswells.com and determine what year by the serial number, then look for the catalog for that year and see if it does.

Are there holes where the plate would mount?

We have two Heavy 10s and both have speed charts. I have one that's rather old and one from the 90s we bought new.
I'm curious if they both have the same charts. We only use them for a very specialized process so the charts have been covered up for many years.

SteveM - There is an information plate on the inside of the pulley lid but that's it, I see any
other holes where another plate would have been. I checked out the Wswells.com site and
it was pretty daunting looking the serial numbers, close but no cigar on matching the serial.

RCRR - I would love to see them so that I can make a duplicate for my buddy.

What is the model number of the lathe (it may be on the QC gearbox plate, or a plate on the end.

What is the serial number (it will be on the FRONT way on the right side).

There may be a number stamped on the right of the REAR way - that will be the part number for the bed.

Can you post any pictures?

The only picture I took was of the serial number so that I could do a look up
on swells site, which is - 8336RKX14
That number seems to date it as being made in the late forties early fifties.
I recall that one of the plates said it was a Model A Heavy 10.
I'll see if can post pictures next week.

Nowhere on the lathe will it use the term "heavy 10", but if it's a 10" and the apron looks like this one (particularly the handle on the right):

then it is.

The "R" in the serial number also indicates heavy 10.
