Hi There,

The lever style clutch was used on the late model Heavy Ten's.
These were popular enough that SBL offered a kit with instructions
to convert earlier star knob lathes over to the lever type.

Have you checked the spindle out yet? If it is a late model (which
your description indicates), it might have the D1-4 spindle mount
instead of the threaded spindle.

Good Luck!

Webb do you have any info on the kit or instructions?
I would love to change mine to a lever action, as I think it would be a more precise way to disengage the drive.

Hi There,

The instructions to convert the star knob over
to a lever type clutch is in the SBL parts manual;
specifically, the South Bend Lathe CE3458 Parts
Manual for 10", 13", 14½", 16" and 16/24" Lathes

Here is a link to a PDF version:

South Bend Lathe CE3458 Parts Manual for 10", 13", 14½", 16" and 16/24" Lathes

Look on page 23 of the manual (pg 25 of the pdf),
on the page headed: Form 992-C Con't.

Good Luck!

All things considered, I cannot get the right parts at a reasonable price to restore what is left, ie, a broken funky compound. So having gotten a complete 9 inch compound of a more available type, I think I am going to put a filler ring on the spud and fly that way.

Finding or making the base stock may prove to be the hard part here..
