Yep, I used the mystery metal. It's not very hard, that's for sure. I'll have to be extra careful to wipe the mating surfaces before installing. The four jaw chuck is not marked except for "made in USA". I'm surprised that it doesn't have a makers mark as it's a very nicely made chuck. The 3 jaw is a Buck chuck adjustable for concentricity (an "adjust-true"?)

It's a spitting image of my 4" Buck independent chuck marked as model "1144." I'm envious of your SAG 12 -- very nice lathe you have! Hope the issues you mention are able to be worked out in short order.

Well, I'll be darned. My chuck is marked 1144 as well! Is your's marked "Buck"?

Fortunately Harold has a Sag 12 that he bought new and has been very helpful thus far. I hope to glean more Sag 12 information from him. He lives a bit more than 100 miles from me so I'll probably present myself to him, hat in hand, in the not too distant future. The biggest problem with the lathe is that apparently the split cross feed nut is excessively worn. Since Graziano is no more the only real fix is to either repair (?) the old one or make a new one. For the time being and since I've been able to work around this problem (thanks to the DRO) I have a Bridgeport that needs finishing and I need to put a priority on that first.........

Yes. Right above "Made in the USA" is stamped "Buck Tool Co." on mine.

Odd, that is missing on mine. Maybe the "Buck Tool Co." stamping guy was on vacation when mine went down the line........

Here is an old 2" chuck I bought for my watchmakers lathe about 20 years ago. Its stamped BUCK TOOL CO. KALAMAZOO MICH.. The body is aluminum and tha jaws are hardened and ground steel. It had the 8mm mounting arbor on it when I got it. I've never seen another like it. Maybe it was made in the 1950s.
