Handy insert tool holder.

Post by John Evans »

Aloris makes these indexable holders normaly mounted on a QC block. I aquiered one several years ago that just had a square shank ,then lost it of my truck roof. Managed to find 2 more heads and make a shank for one, shank however needs to be at least 1".
You can index the head of it to several different angles and also it works as both L &R turning holder. The shank has a through bolt that allows you to tip the head for side rake ,has 3 marks on it to show where you have set it. The shank has a stop pin that engages a hole on the head to prevent too much rake being cranked in. With it's indexing and my Multifix 40 posistion post that one tool does dang near anything posistion wise.

I looked more at the toolholder than at the operation, in a recent post. I already knew the operation was success but that toolpost remains less a mystery. Great of you to share. Not the type one can find and not that which could be known, without your post.

Rex, it seems the tool holder is still available from many suppliers.

A search for "Aloris cc-20" turns up many opportunities to buy one.

It seems you get to buy the Aloris style block to get that style holder. I orignally got one in a lot buy with a 1" sq shank and like a idiot I lost it. Having a Multi fix tool post what Aloris now sells did me no good what so ever. I did manage to find 2 heads and fabed up my own shank. But a 1" shank is about as small as you can go due to the through hole and stop pin.

I have two small variations, Aloris indexable boring bar. One is missing the end piece which I would some day like to make.

Really. Indexed end and then less positioning. Great stuff.

Aloris makes this kind of toolholder with a straight shank as well as the integrated tool post block version. They're made all the way from 3/8" square up to 1-1/4". Look at pages 38-39 of the 2012 Aloris catalog (still current) for the details. They even list replacement parts---such as just the shank  Not that the one made in the original post is any worse. Looks fine and suitable to me! :)

Arthur: My google fu is not very good ,looked all over for the shank style tool. Sure would be nice for one with a 1/2 "shank for my small lathe. Back to the search !! Thanks

AT-10 long shank 1/2" version:
http://www.aloris.com/store/index.php?r ... uct_id=923
AT-10S short shank 1/2" version:
http://www.aloris.com/store/index.php?r ... arch=AT-10

They'll take a smaller size insert than your larger version, but they function the same.

Arthur : Found that earlier, but the way I read things that $62 is just the bar,the insert holder is additional. I'll check into that the first of the week. Got to look in my insert collection as I think I have some. Thanks again.
