Clausing 8520 milling machine

Post by Oldengineer »

Has anyone out there ever fittted a Clausing 8520 milling machine with a DRO?

I am considering installation of a 2 axis (X, Y) DRO... if this is not a major task that will require extreme modification to the machine.

If there are any machinists that have done this, and you don't mind sharing the details of any modifications, I would be very greatful to hear about your experiences.

Hi

There is a fellow, Mike Henry, over on the Yahoo Clausing site that has a complete writup on how to
put a servo on the 8520, the bolt holes even line up. He also put the shooting star on his.

I put a shooting star 3 axis on my 8530 but the knee, table and column are all different so mine is
not necessarily exactly doable on the 8520.

Mine came with a DRO- but this is the variety that the encoders are mounted right on the ends of the table to work with the screws as opposed to the sliding style.

It's an old servotech- but I couldn't imagine that installing a DRO on this mill would be anything more than a couple of screws really.

I can't say much, since I've had neither but the reading off the slide would super. There it IS. I like the "two screws" idea. Finding the right place and custom stand-offs, requires some planning. This is good stuff, not get'er done stuff. The results depend upon your unique planning now and not many holes later. You know and cool we do also. Down to bare metal with two holes.
