I saw on YouTube Oxtoolco demonstrate some uses for a sine bar.
One was to set a flat reference plate in the vise using a sine bar that is setup to the same angle you want to tilt your head. Then stick a DTI in the spindle and rotate it on the plate, like you would normally tram a head, and adjust for zero needle. This should be more accurate than using a protractor. I suspect you can use a sine bar on each axis to accurately set a compound angle.
