Help with wiring a drum switch

Post by savage_hunter »

Hello, I have a Clausing 8520 that I am trying to wire up.

I had the machine wired up per the motor wiring diagram and it runs beautifully. Unfortunately I don't understand electricity well enough to properly flow electricity through the switch with out tripping breakers... This is all single phase 110v:

I suggest you get someone involved who understands this stuff. We don't want to be reading any stories here about someone's house burning down or that someone getting electrocuted.

Hi There,

I hope this will be self explanatory. Disregard color coding
as it doesn't pertain to this motor. I modified a diagram I had
so the terminal designation would match your tag.

Good Luck!

Hi Webb,

Thank you for the quick reply! I like your avatar.

While puzzling over this I drew up something that resembles your diagram and I had the white wire coming from the motor and the white wire coming from the outlet wired together but was afraid I was creating a live circuit and never tried it out. I'm glad that I stopped here and someone else has drawn up the same diagram as I had envisioned.

Also it looks like I need to buy some more wire. I had 12/4 AWG wired up directly to the outlet and was able to run the motor in forward and reverse (by switching z5 and z8) but wasn't able to figure how to switch the leads with out the extra wire.

Thank you again for verifying what I thought was right to be right!

Hi There,

I'm glad to be of some service. Just make sure
the white wire is the Neutral lead (i.e. not the
"hot" lead). Nema specifies the white to be the
neutral lead.

Good Luck!
