Hi All,
I just bought this new Valenite Face Mill and I have a few questions.
First, I need an arbor and I assume that a Shell mill & Face mill arbor are the same? This one requires a 3/4" arbor.
Second question, this mill head ueses AP 13 inserts only. Where can one purchase inserts for a "Reasonable" price?
And last, I have never used a mill such as this so if someone can give me an idea on RPM & feed rates I would be appreciated. I plan on using the mill on aluminum, mild steel & cast iron.
Thanks.
John.
Valenite face mill questions
Re: Valenite face mill questions
Didn't see any inserts on eBay.
Carbide Depot has them, but only sold in packs of ten.

MSC or other industrial suppliers may have them as well.
RPM and feed rates will be dictated by the insert used and the material being cut.
Carbide Depot also lists that info.

Sandvik lists the pertinent data on the insert package, which is real handy, but I don't know if Valenite does the same or not.
LOTS of good info on the Caride Depot site if you look around.
Unfortunately, proprietary inserts can be expensive for the grades that you would usually need. That's why you sometimes see Valenite, Sandvik and other high quality name brand tooling for sale on ebay cheap. People realize what it costs to feed them inserts and dump them for tooling that accepts generic inserts, which are usually much cheaper.

Re: Valenite face mill questions
Glenn,
Don't want to hi jack the thread, but your comments are on the money. It happens that I'm thinking of adding a small face mill, probably 2", so I wondered if you could point out some brands that use the cheaper, generic inserts?
Thanks
Terry

Re: Valenite face mill questions
Hello chief,
This would be an example of an inexpensive face mill that would accept generic inserts.
http://cgi.ebay.com/400R-Square-Face-Mi ... 1761wt_905
It will accept APKT 1604, APMT 1604, APHT 1604 inserts. These are about as generic and common as you will find for 90° shoulder milling and plentiful on eBay. APMT are probably the cheapest of the group as the tolerance is a bit looser than APKT. Do a quick search for APKT on eBay and you'll see plenty of inserts and a broad price range. I use the Carbide Depot site and their "Grade Lookup" feature to look up the various inserts to see what they are to be used for.

There are APHT inserts specifically for aluminum that are razor sharp and work really well such as these.
http://cgi.ebay.com/APHT-160408-AL-DAPR ... 500wt_1156
If I had just one face mill it would be a 90° as it allows milling to a 90° shoulder.
The APxx style inserts have two cutting edges.
Just an example, not a recommendation!

Thanks Glenn, that's a good starting point for me. It's great to have you here with your knowledge of insert tooling. Like a lot of novices, the carbide alphabet soup nomenclature makes me dizzy sometimes!
