Re: Bridgeport Quill Spring
My mill is Chinese, but same basic thing as a BP. The quill retracts on its own, sometimes with more force than I would like.

Re: Bridgeport Quill Spring
It is a ballance spring !! But if it is tight enough to hold a 3" boring head with the quill about half way down it may then be tight enough to return on it's own unloaded. Bottom line it is not suspost to work like a DP !

Re: Bridgeport Quill Spring
The Bridgeport quill spring is only a counterbalance and is not intended to retract the quill. If you get it too tight it will wind completely tight and probably break when you run the quill all way to the bottom.

Nice engine. Where did you get the castings?JackinLA wrote:Thanks
Thats sort of what I thought but like just about everything else that I have learned about this hobby I have learned by trial and error and Youtube. I saw someone who took his hand off the handle and the quill retracted on its own, and I got to thinking "Mine Doesn't Do That" now I know for sure that mine is adjusted correctly.
By the way This is what I use the bridgeport for...
