Thanks for the links. I used to have a Case 2290 tractor that had a power shift transmission. It started to fail and would not engage reverse and a couple forward speeds. The main problem (there were several issues, and this tranny commonly fails  ) was caused by a Belleville spring. There were several springs stacked back to back in a hydraulic clutch pack, used to cushion the shift (at least I think that's what they were for). One spring broke up into small pieces, and every time that clutch pack shifted, a broken piece of spring would take another bite out of the seal and piston.

The parts came out to about 600, which wasn't bad. Took a week of after work effort. Going price for the tranny rebuild at the dealer was 12K, which was about what the fixed tractor was worth. I suspect the Belleville spring was a little too hard, causing the eventual fractures.

The differential and the final drives also gave problems on this tractor. At least it did have a very good engine.
