LE 1" Pacific Project

Post by SteveR »

My thoughts at the time I bought this were that:
1) There are a number of these beasts running around out there, that this should be something of interest to a number of folks.
2) I wanted to see how LE designed the components and how it compared to my Allen 2-8-0.
3) I was hoping to learn something that could help with the 1" FEF project that I am working on.

Downside(s):
1) No plans - I think that enough is completed that I can still finish it. And occasionally plans come up for sale.
2) No valvegear - a reason to learn Charlie's programs.
3) No boiler - but Marty will build one for me.

Attached are some pictures as received.

I have one that is together, but will reboilering when Marty finishes my boiler. If there's anything in particular you'd like photographed or measured I'd be happy to do it when I get to that project.

I've decided to start designing the missing parts of the valvegear. To use Charlie's program, I need to make a bunch of measurements, then figure out what dimensions will work with the missing pieces. I know this is not the most efficient way, but it's the most fun for me. So I pulled the LHS valve cover off - it was loose anyway.

Then opened the RHS cylinder - to measure the piston and the rod, I need to pull all the way out - guess what, no packing. Nice piston rings tho.

I've pretty much got everything measured and input to the valvegear program, but things look a bit funky so I need to double check.

Steve,
I'm a fan of 1" Scale Railroading, looking forward to seeing the progress on your Pacific and FEF. Here's some inspiration for you. Jack Sessums copy of an FEF-3. Keep on Steamin' My Friend!!

Been pretty busy but things have settled down a bit. Since my last update, I have acquired a partially completed boiler and most of the prints. The prints date from the '60's and some are just works of art. So this allows me to not have to recreate the VG from scratch and get down to rebuilding.
Last year I swore I would make some progress, so Pennsyfan rebuilt the lead truck for me - Thanks D!

The next thing will be the trailing truck. It might make more sense to jump right into the frame, but that's going to be a big job and I would rather do this in smaller bites. Besides there are rigging components missing that will tie into the rest of the frame rigging. Here's the truck and springs before I started cleaning it up. Note that the springs don't actually fit correctly down onto the journal boxes. They are too wide. Added to that is there are some problems on the TT where we are a bit short of material....

You can see little bubbles in the casting around the edge and there is an obvious fix. Harder to see is that some of 3 holes for the equalizer fulcrum are not straight. Suggestions?

Thanks,
SteveR
