Making the new water outlet fittings and working on the front deck tool boxes. I think I have it worked out on how to make the entire tool box, front deck assembly removable so batteries and possible compressor may be squeezed under the oil tank.
Welding is getting to be a major problem for me, cannot see the weld as it is being made. Even moving outside has not really helped. Maybe after the cataracts are taken care of things will improve.

Well, most of the engineering for the front of the tender has been accomplished. The tool boxes are made and installed. The remounted oil shut off valve and linkage are made and installed. Need the water cooler and flag holders to finish up this part of the project. They will be attached to the false front for the oil tank.

Brian, Dan, Ken, thanks for the kind words. And a special thanks to Ken for the tender photographs of the 5021 tender. He shot the angles and close ups normally ignored by most photographers, yet are invaluable to us modellers.
Glued up the water and ice cooler for the front of the tender. Plywood glued to a solid block. The box is not big enough to be useful as a water storage device so a solid core will work and provide the strength to survive the front of the tender where giant legs tend to be found during operation.
Made a male and female die to bend the supports for the handles and to bend the wire. Originally milled the slot in the aluminum die , it bent the brass strip all right but the wire dented the aluminum. Steel inserts were made and they work great.

Last weekend the Rail Giants Museum in Pomona was open and a casual mention Friday afternoon led to a quick weekend getaway. Turned out to be a 1000 mile round trip and thankfully my wife was up to the task of taking on most of the driving. The trip netted about three hours of photographing and taking of measurements. A quick stop by the Riverside Live Steamers to say hi to Jim Kreider and we were off for home. Even with my wife doing the lions share of driving it wasn't until today that I was in decent enough shape to head back out to the shop.
Finished up the water cooler and made the mounting brackets.
Started on the two steps that go on the front of the oil tank. At first trying to form them from 1/8" welding rod did not produce the desired results for the mounting feet. Put a piece of 1/2' dia. cold rolled steel in the rotary table and machined the foot outline, drilled the two holes and sliced the feet off with a slitting saw.
Test welded one of the feet using the heliarc at almost its lowest setting. Looks like it will work so the other three feet will be attached tomorrow.

The tender is looking good. Maybe Robert has some extra paper cups laying around in his caboose. It would appear you have finally been infected with the same disease as him and me.

Hi Vic,
While in Pomona photographing the 5021 I did find a cup dispenser mounted to the back of the cab above the engineers rear window. I didn't get a chance to put a tape measure on it but it looks like the one Robert built for his C-30 caboose. I will have to get the dimensions from him and make one someday.

Vic is right on target. SP used the same paper cup dispenser at both ends of the train, steam or diesel for many decades. Kept servicing universal system wide and ordering of cups was just a matter of keeping up with seasonal demand. Same dispenser was found in the passenger cars as well.
Need to finish up the 10-20 3 position retain valve and send it along with the cup dispenser for mass production in lost wax. Feeling more like getting back into the shop after surgery.

Decided to bite the bullet and separate the tender body from the trucks and false bottom. Will make installing the new valves and piping a lot easier. A heat wave is expected this week so I hope I can get out in the shop early enough to get some work done before getting cooked.

Some progress on the steam heat line that runs along the left side of the tender. Mostly finished once some more friction tape is purchased. Time to work on the air piping that goes along the other side. I have also been removing paint with a cup wire brush in the Makita 4.5" grinder. Going to try the masking vinyl and paint the lettering instead of applying the vinyl. Will be an interesting experiment. I was going to do this for the cab but the small numbers would not cut clean and the knife pulled out the smaller details.
Put up some photographs taken in Pomona. It will take at least one more day for them to upload due to an archaic internet connection I live with. Some UP 9000 photo's are currently on line and an additional 140 or so SP 5021 photographs are currently being uploaded and will have their own gallery when all is said and done. I took a few details of the ATSF 3450 but those are at least several days or weeks away before posting.
