What size drill bit did you use for the holes?

I am getting ready to start my Iron work. I was going to use .125 steel rod but yours looks great.

So you used plain close hanger wire?

Some holes are a number 44 drill for a number 2 screws with nuts on back side where they mount to thin material, and the rest are .044" diameter for mounting to thicker material with small brads that mic .040, but the tips have a little burr which needs a little clearance.

Yes I used coat hanger wire. Not all hangers are .090" diameter, so I sorted through them. The finish on the ones I used wiped off with lacquer thinner.

Drilling the .041 diameter holes through the middle for pinning the center supports before silver soldering was a very tedious operation. The use of a very small center drill to start the hole was a must. I also found making a couple blocks of wood shaped to hold the formed wire in the mill jaws very handy.

What is the manufacturer/name of the red paint? It is perfect for that caboose! Timmy

Rob...very nice! Never seen a caboose with truss rods on the end walls. Interesting details...nice touch. Will you be sharing the finished photos after you get the graphics on the sides? After that, take LOTS of photos on and off the track...as the caboose (or any other piece of equipment) never looks as good as the day it rolls out of the shop!

Great job! You should get lots of compliments as that rolls down the track. Now...what's next? :P : Carl B.
