Twin Piston Oil Pump Project

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
No time to speak of in the shop today.
I did get a chance to cut the four eccentric followers from the bronze rod and mill out the flats and slots.
Tomorrow night is welding class. Moving up to MIG Welding.
Turned to size and center drilled on the lathe.
Sliced off to .1875 thick with a cut off tool
Flats and slot done on milling machine using a 3/8 inch mill.

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
Other than being scaled up 1.5 times to work with the larger pump, the drive ratchet is not changed from Mr. Hiraoka's book. The art work for his method of machining was incorporated into the print as part of my drawing training. It was very easy to input a JPEG as part of a 2D print using Solidworks.
Having pirated his art work, I should mention these pumps or prints are not for sale. This is simply a hobby project that I believe Mr. Hiraoka would approve. Putting it on the forum is to motivate me to finish and inspire my fellow modelers to greatness.

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
Less and less time in the shop.
Finished the other two followers a and two of the drive bushing nuts.
These are also made of half inch hex brass with a 3/8-24 thread.

Some progress tonight.
The bushings for the drive shaft.
Pontiac guy has started on the eccentric and ratchet wheel.

Single Point Threading the Drive Shaft Bushings.
I do not have a 3/8-24 die so all the threading had to be done on the lathe.

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
The pump plungers attached to the eccentric followers
This is the second tank prototype with the pumps offset to one end. I really need to buy a piece of 2x3 tubing without the rust on the inside.

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
I'd suggest you explore the possibility of a blast cabinet instead. They're very useful, and offer the opportunity to improve surface conditions on a myriad of materials. So long as rusting isn't excessive, you'd not know it was ever there. Even then, you can eliminate rusting, salvaging items that you'd prefer to not replace. You just have to live with a little pitting.Pipescs wrote: I really need to buy a piece of 2x3 tubing without the rust on the inside.
If you decide to take the plunge, procure both aluminum oxide and glass bead. They do not behave in the same way, as bead doesn't cut, while aluminum oxide does.

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
DAAAA... Harold there is one of these in the shed. I moved it out there to make room in the shop.I'd suggest you explore the possibility of a blast cabinet instead.
In the mean time I made a few parts this afternoon. This after a 30 mile bike race this morning, so I am dragging somewhat.
The four pumps are coming along. The bodies still need to be drilled on the side and tapped for a 3/16 MPT. This will be for the oil outlet.
An exploded view. The ball is 3/16 diameter and the stainless steel springs are from McMaster Carr

Re: Twin Piston Oil Pump Project
I just caught a mistake in my two prototypes. I had drawn the tanks as originally built up from plate. This with the tank bottom being set into the sides. When I welded up the two test tanks I simply welded the plate across the bottom of the tubing.
This throws the piston travel off by 1/8th inch. I will have to make up a set of plungers with slightly longer length to make up for it.
