Martin Evans' "Greene King" 4-6-0 3-1/2" gauge build
Hello.
My name is max and I am fairly new ro the live steam community. I have been an avid hobby machinist since my younger days. I recently stumbled up an incredible deal. I picked up the Greene King kit from a guy on kijiji for a steal. Any advice on what to expect? The kit was manufactured by AJREEVES.

Hi Max,
What to expect? Well, you can probably tell us more than we can tell you. Tell us exactly what is included in the "kit". We have no clue as to wether you purchased a ready to run locomotive, or, a box of castings. You will have to tell us.
What other locomotives have you built? What is your past experience? What tools do you have?
David

It is a kit of castings, I have built a few small stand alone steam engines, but never a locomotive
I have a 13"x24" metal lathe and a small knee mill. The kit should arrive on Friday and then I will post some pictures.

My experience is that Reeves sells good castings.
Beyond that all anyone can say is that you should expect a lot more work than you think it will be.

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Yes, I'm planning on spending many years to complete it the most difficult thing so far has been trying to find a decent picture of the original locomotive!

you might want to try some of the club boards from the UK.

I joined one, there are so many, I'm not sure which one would be the best/ most popular.

You can find more info from AJ Reeves:
http://www.ajreeves.com/greene-king.html
Here's the pic from the Reeves web site: Don't know what you paid or how complete yours is, but a complete kit from Reeves is £850.00, or about $1,100 US.
The drawings and many of the parts are still available from Reeves.

Reeves describes it as
4-6-0 S15 EX-SR tender Loco
The preserved South Railway S15 class loco of the National Collection
The S15 class even has a Wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSWR_S15_class
Googling "South Railway S15 class loco", you can see some pics:

Hi Max,
Sounds like a fun project! Also sounds like you have the tools and experience to get the machining part of the job done. More than anything, building a locomotive is an exercise in time management. I hope you will be able to join a club near you that has a track of appropriate gauge. Does the "kit" include material for the boiler?
