Romulus build

Post by Fred_V »

I've taken on a commission to take a Romulus from running on air to running on steam. Here is a video if it running. It has Southern valve gear.

More to follow

Today I set the boiler in place and will now mark and drill holes to mount boiler to saddle. Next will be to drill holes for the steam pipe and exhaust pipe to come into the smokebox. I'll mark the smokebox for the stack and move the boiler to the mill for that operation.
Lots to do.

Thanks for posting the video. It seemed strange that the video was mostly of the blast pipes and the top of the valve chests. A still photo would have been good enough for that. You might consider, for a moving picture video, more shots of the valve gear from the side.

My purpose was to hear the exhaust beat in forward and reverse.

I made the Johnson bar and quadrant this week. A bit more cleanup and add the reach rod will finish it.

A busy 3 days in the shop. Got some big jobs out of the way.
Grind and fit, grind and fit, grind some more to get the stack to fit the smokebox.
Located the stack and drilled the rivet holes.

Next is to make a hole in the smokebox to match the stack.
I used a 2.5" hole saw and it went quite well.

Fred,
What rpm did you run the hole saw? Lubricant or not? Will need to make a 2.25" diameter hole in a boiler you already know about.
