Scotty,

Have you built the Big Bertha replacement engine? Any pix?

Bill:
No. There are 5 of us building one CliShay. We have broken the build down to divy up the work. My first section to build is the frame with the jackshaft. When that is complete, my next task is to collect the parts to build the "flame in tube" boiler.
The two fellows who are partnering up on the engine, are just finishing the trucks and beginning to collect materials to build the Big Bertha. So, the engine build technically has begun.... but no significant progress as of yet.
We at Maricopa Live Steamers, are beginning the work week leading up to the January Open Card Order Meet, for the 7.1/2" and the 4 3/4" guages, so work on the CliShay will slow down for probably a month.

Thanks Scotty. I would be interested in how the Bertha engineering goes as to reverse linkage.

By the way do you know Larry Kirchner at Maricopa?

Bill,
I do know Larry, his container is right next to mine (ours, 3 owners). We are kinda working on improving the same area of track by installing plastic ties that he purchased.

Scotty,

I have known Larry for a long time. Say hi next time you see him from Bill at CALS in Baltimore

It's good to hear that the Tom Bee couplers will work. How much side play is appropriate? I calculate it as about 8° in each direction with the shank and the coupler pocket as is.

I'm still planning to go per plan on the engine and transmission.

After about a two week shop hiatus I managed to get the shift rod assembly done this past weekend. The assembly is used to connect the reach rod from the reverse lever stand to the transmission. It was a fairly simple part to make but with enough different operations to make it interesting.

I decided to silver solder the parts together in lieu of the Loctite called for in the plans. I haven’t done that much silver soldering so it gave me a chance to practice some more. It also means I will not have to worry about it coming apart in the future.

Slow but steady progress on my Clishay build

I’m getting to the point on the transmission where I have enough parts made to start putting stuff together.

More work on the transmission.

The side frames are complete. I’ve started to work the gears.

My Clishay transmission is approaching completion.

I need to drill and tap the setscrew holes in the sprocket and match drill the bearing blocks to the base plate.

I am also planning on keying the big main gear to the shaft. The plans call for only Loctite but others have found this to be a common failure point. I’ll still use Loctite to secure the gear to the shaft but the key should take up the rotational torque.

Once I have the transmission done I’ll get back to finishing up the trucks, frame and the rest of the drive train. I want to have everything buttoned up before I start on the engine.

I like it. There seemes to be quite a few larger scale clishays out there.
