I know exactly how you feel. I had my buddy "Ears" for about 18 years. I missed him so much that I bought a Dachshund puppy a few months later. A new puppy sure does make a difference----!

finished the reversing piston and started hogging the chunk of cast iron to make the rings. will go back down a lil laterand snap a few photos. the rings are double machined instead of annealed.....pretty slick. will show the process....

rough cut the first 2 rings....going to make 5 or 6 "just in case".

I bored it deep enough to pick up 2 rings...yet still be able to jam the bull nose live center in to hold everything tight so the chatter was kept to a minimum and no chance of it catching and ripping it out of the chuck, which with small machines can happen....a lil extra care must be taken when making larger parts in small machines.

I am constantly amazed at your skill! You are living proof that you do not have to have a large industrial grade machine in order to make perfect parts!! Congratulations and GOOD LUCK!!

I t can become a lil overly time consuming using small machines to make larger parts.....

this is where patience becomes a definate virtue.

That's a great set-up with the center in there to support the part.... Thanks for sharing that! I'll keep that in my bag of tricks.

benn making the special jigs and fixtures to hold the castings very precisely. turning fixtures on a sherline are best done by drilling and talling a 3/4" thread on one end and just screwing it directly onto the headstock instead of trying to hold it in a chuckthen when turned to size it is deadly true...even if you have to take it off and put it back on. remains true.

will post a few photos in a day or so....life is getting in th way once again.

Ok...cut a bunch more rings.....and made a ring lapping block from a scrapped 1st operation Sherline hand wheel......bored the compression sleeve and started the second ring cut mounting spud.

also shown is the rough spud for turning the crosshead guide frame. and the cylinder is mounted on the jig plate for boring and drilling.....made the mount holes so it can be mounted vertical and horizontal.

Pamela

will go back down a lil later today and keep going. want to have the rings lapped and split and the spud done.
