Sorry the truck lever connector runs through the bolster.

I know both Railroad Supply and Howard Gorin
sell prototypical truck brake parts like the live and dead levers, their mounts, etc. Dave S. may also. Howard has photos on his website and older RR Supply catalogs have photos of their parts

The next piece I need is the angled Brake lever guides. Figuring I need this to line everything up. there is one at each end of the truck. Only one has pin holes in it.

I am using Solid Works Student version for laying out the parts.

It looks like the rod will clear underneath, so I am trying that route first.

Slotting the Brake Lever Guides.

As I am a totally YouTube/self taught metal destroyer, I started taking night classes at the local Community College. The Senior Scholarship Program here in Alabama waives the tuition for us old guys.

In this class I learned the trick of cutting as much metal away with a saw or drill bit prior to using an expensive milling cutter.

So for the slot I drilled 3/16" holes on .25 centers, then went back with a 3/16" end mill. Having broken more milling cutters than I can remember, I made the passes slow and at .025 inches deep per pass. After hitting bottom, I moved over .004 to each side to do a clean up pass and to give clearance for the 3/16" thick brake lever to slide in.

I still have a lot of work to finish them. I plan on using a sine plate I have to put the 30 degree angle for mounting them.

We call that chain drilling Charlie.

Very nice work. The few times I've tried it
the job got done but it was nowhere the craftsman work you accomplished.

Nice!

I remember reading somewhere that a drill bit will remove metal faster than any orher tool, but not sure if they considered a cutting torch. ;-)

At the last moment, I changed the Pin Hole size in the Brake lever guide to 3/16 inch diameter.

I used a sine plate to set up the 30 degree angle cuts on the milling machine.

I still need to drill and tap them for mounting on the frame.

Still banging away at it.

Tomorrow I am making a trip to Pulaski Tennessee to drop off the pipe for them to cope the pipe and to cut out the pieces that will become the boiler for the Rust Bucket.
