Re: CNW J class Mikado
Tim,
Great info! Thanks a lot. Ouch on the mold printing. I figured it wasn't cheap but $4k?!! Wow!
This may just be the ticket. I am assuming that as written on the pattern, they just made up all the molds and did a single melt/pour on all 8 pieces?

The foundry pours a lot of different metals. They wait until they have a number of items to pore to make it more cost effective.
They should be poring a test cylinder this week. if it works this time they will pore 3 more.

Tim,
Thanks for answering all these questions.
Did you use cast iron or grey iron for the wheels?
You mentioned .100" for shrinkage. Was that for diameter only?
What did you do for the thickness?
Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter
I drew the wheels full size to the drawing, adding 1 inch to the surfaces that would be machined and making sure I had the correct draft. Then I scaled the drawing, in my case multiply by 0.133333 for 1.6" scale. Then multiply by 1.00833 for the shrinkage. The casting came out right on size leaving me just over 1/8" for machining.

When I was at the foundry picking up my drivers I was able to take a picture of the mold with cores installed.

I was able to do a little foundry myself. Here is a picture of the main frame cross tie.

Tim,
Thanks for the details. looks great! I have found someone who may be able to locally print the patterns for me! I just need to get started! I will be following your progress with great interest!

Hi All
Work on the locomotive has been slow, but I have been able to cast the Equalizer Fulcrum and Brake Hangers. Now to get them mounted on the frames.

FLtenwheeler,
Those castings of the hangers and brackets you made are looking great!!
Patterns (cylinders) which are containing cores I didn't make myself yet due to their complexity ...
Please continue reporting your progress, thanks!

I have machined the two cross ties that I have cast. I will be poring one more cross tie this weekend. So I am slowly moving forward with the project.
