3/4" scale F-3 diesel project for NEOLS
We are in the beginning stage of building one of John Hudak's F-3 for a club highline engine.
There was a lot of enthusiasm for this and it's finally in motion.
lots of club members will be helping out with various parts. Machining, assembling, electronics etc.
here's the first picture from John of the shell.
more to follow!

How much horsepower do the motors have?
Re: 3/4" scale F-3 diesel project for NEOLS
The motors I used on my Pennsys were rated at 130 watts each, there are two of them, so 260 watts is pretty close to 1/3hp....JDPRR wrote:How much horsepower do the motors have?

horse power really isn't a factor in miniature railroading, it's tractive force. with creative gearing and a heavy locomotive....very little actual "horse power" is required.

Before Harry gets started on the actual construction of the chassis, I figured I'd post some pictures of the prepping of the shell.. When the shell comes out of the mold, it needs to be trimmed of all the excess fiberglass that is necessary to ensure that the whole body gets "molded".. I'm using a small diamond wheel on a dremel type tool that makes easy work of the removal process.. Lots of dust, and flying debris, so eye protection is a must...

I also see that you are using a Dust Mask.
That should be a MUST as Fiberglass is Very close to as dangerous as Asbestos.
When US shipyards went from Asbestos to glass, they just did not admit that but safety precautions were about the same.

I never realized that fiberglass was almost as dangerous as asbestos, thanks for the heads-up..!chooch wrote:I also see that you are using a Dust Mask.

I'll be delivering the F unit kit today to a member of NEOLS so they can get started in the construction of the club highline engine.. I figured I'd post some photos of the chassis, as that's where they are going to start.. The first pics are of the dummy unit, the 1" angle iron frame rails can be seen, as well as the CRS truck mounts, and aluminum front/rears..
Re: 3/4" scale F-3 diesel project for NEOLS
And here are the pics of the powered chassis, built just the same as the dummy, but with one more CRS cross piece, located where the batteries come together, and so they can sit on it.. Hard to see, as it's not as wide as the truck mounts. The wooden mount for the fuel tank was notched out to clear this piece, as the one photo shows..

The diesel group build will start this week!
I started a little early.
Here's some pics of the trucks so far!
Thanks again John for all of your help!
If you see me screwing up, tell me!
