Another deviation is in the cab and water tank layout. In “Live Steam”, June 1979, Leland Cobb proposed an alternative like the #149 Climax, “Gold Bug”. Here’s a photo of the #149 “Gold Bug” and Leland’s drawing. This is the look I plan to do.

I love the Gold Bug version. It would be great if you painted it per the prototype. It likely would have either been yellow or a highly varnished blond wood with red and gold lettering.

Not something you would see at every meet!

Another variant of the Goldbug I had done back around 1984 for Ray Cad was the 040 variety.

I somewhat cobbled the picture to come up with this.

So what progress?

What was the actual Goldbug #149's drive line like? How did it differ from the clishay?

If it's a Climax, it's probably a Class A with a vertical boiler. A friend has a Class A with a T boiler that I have been able to climb around on. As with other Climaxes, it has a drive shaft running down the center, between the trucks. I believe it uses skew bevel gears with the drive shaft above the axles. The Class As have a engine that looks a lot like two cylinder model that would be used on a launch. They also include a two speed transmission. There is a good web page on geared locomotives at http://www.gearedsteam.com/.

Dick is correct, although I had no idea about it being 2 speed. Makes sense as I never understood the stack of gears. As to the 149 number, I believe that number is possibly one that some one thought looked nice. I only modified some one elses picture to give rough idea of what I had tried to create for Ray Cadd back in 1983.

There is another Chishay in 'Live Steam' Jan 1980 that turned the engine 90 degrees to run a drive shaft. Uses beveled gears on the axles for power transmission.

For what its worth, one of our past members was building a scaled up Kozo Climax a number of years ago and he also got a chance to look at the prototype class A. He said the Kozo trucks (a class B?) appeared to be the same as the ones for the A.

At some point, the Climax Locomotive Works change the Climax trucks to the smaller skew bevel gears were outside the axels rather than inbetween as the originally were.
