Railroad Supply American Boilers

Post by Marty_Knox »

We have been working on 3 Railroad Supply 1 1/2" scale 4-4-0 boilers. They are a challenge because of the size and working from 3 different sets of drawings, but we are pleased with the way they are coming together. Here are some pictures.

Beautiful steel boilers! What is the overall length of these boilers?

Marty,
May I ask why you are working from three different sets of drawings for this boiler. They appear identical.

The boilers we are building are identical. I have the RRS drawings for a copper boiler, and two versions of their drawings for steel boilers.
These are built to MY drawings, so I guess there are actually 4 drawing sets.

Marty,
Are you using the old RRSC throttle set up? In the original version it worked kind of like a switch. I suggested that the vertical hole in the casting be modified. Where the round hole in the throttle bar started to open to admit steam a triangle or a involute could be made with accustom broach. This would allow more sensitive throttle control at start up. I had suggested this to Chet Peterson in the early 70s but he said the throttle was a good design and he would not change it. I talked to King Fry and he agreed but as he was building to RRSC prints and they were supplying the throttle assemblies there was nothing he could do unless a individual asked him to have the broach made - a very expensive order.

Hi Cary - yes, we are using the RRSC throttle setup. I had my reservations about it from the start. I just may try your idea.
I may try filing the triangle in.
