Post by FRED DADDI »

Anyone have a recommendation for a simple 3 1/2” ga riding car? Or are there any out there for sale?

Check with Joe Tanski for the Bill Morewood-designed riding car for 3.5-inch gauge.
I have two. It is a great design.

Suggest you consider a 1" scale set of trucks for your 3/4" loco...

They are a lot easier to balance on (especially as we get older)…..

Labor day weekend. Saturdau for sure...maybe friday also.

If you like I can bring a 3/4" track car so that you can see. There will be many 1" riding cars there anyway so that ypu can compare stability. Brittany rides on a 1" car that I built for her that she pulls behind her 3/4 loco.

I second Bill on 1" riding car for 3/4" scale locomotive (or smaller) when you can operate on a multigauge track like PLS. Use an off-center connection to buffer beam on riding car that does not excert a side force on locomotive's tender.

Also, consider link-and-pin coupler, easily made from 2"-3" length of 1/8"x1/2" CRS. They are far less expensive than than cast couplers, they don't break in every derailment, and you never have to watch your locomotive zooming down the track by itself.

If you are physically capable of getting up and down from your car without passing out or faling over, there is nothing like lying-down on the riding car for shear realism watching flashing rods, rocking loco deck, ballast a blur. I ran my 2.5" gauge tenwheeler that way for thirty years and never experienced a greater "high" from live steam.

I also prefer use of steel links and pins instead of couplers in small scale. Much less headache.

But rhen I am not known for being a rivet counting model maker.
