Stainless Steel Arch for my RGS 20
Over the weekend I made an arch for my RGS 20. I used 3/8" x 2" 316L with 1/4" x 3/4" for the cross bar. I drilled 1/4" holes in both the uprights and cross bars. I pressed the 1/4" pins in the uprights, and reamed the holes slightly over size in the cross bar. I welded the pins to the uprights, then welded 1/4" x 3/4" 'feet' to the uprights. The feet fit into a step milled into the front of the grate to keep the arch from sliding back.

More pictures - first, the firebox without the arch.
Then the arch with the feet sitting on the grate.
Then the arch in place.

Does anything keep it from moving back in the firebox?

Yes - the 1/4" x 3/4" 'feet' drop into the step milled across the front of the grate.

Now that's an arch that won't go out the stack too quick! Very nice!

Marty...sorry, but I gotta ask. In the first firebox photo...it doesn't look like the bottom edge of the arch goes all the way to the front flue sheet. Did you put something else in there to close off air infiltration at the flue sheet? Would seem counterproductive to insure complete combustion only to allow fresh air in right in front of the flues. I think that was just for clarity. The following pix show it all the way forward and dropped into the notch in the grates.

Just a newbie question... Was there a specific reason for using stainless for this application? I have been considering an arch for my LE 0-6-0...

Yes, the specific reason being the 316L - L meaning Low Carbon, should last longer in the conditions found in the firebox. Carbon steel would oxidize rapidly .Jbt68 wrote:Just a newbie question... Why not bending the support a bit upwards to improve stability at red hot temperatures? Just my 1 cent.
