One Piece or Two Piece?

Post by FLtenwheeler »

Valve sleeves, what do you think I was talking about?

The prototype used two piece piston valve sleeves. What are you using in 1-1/2" scale?

sometimes 2 piece sleeve sets do not always align after being pressed into the cylinders.

I personally prefer one piece sleeves, slightly relieved in the center around the OD so that the press in easy.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I made 1 piece liners - details here:

At the suggestion of Gordon Carlson, I used white lead (lead oxide) as a lubricant and a bonding agent during the pressing of the liners.

I made 2-piece valve liners, per the plans for my 90-ton Mikado.
I finish-reamed them after pressing into the valve chamber.

I used two piece piston valve sleeves for my 1.5" K4 per design from Dave Sclavi. Because the spool valve rides on the outer sides of the valve cylinder, a small amount of misalignment is ok. I chamfered the inner edges where the two halves come together to help the spool (loaded with rings) make the transition across the center (when being loaded into the sleeves) in case there was any misalignment at the center. My valve sleeves pressed in with no problem and the spool valves went in fine too (ie: the rings on one end of the spool jumped the center transition with no problem). Make sure you bore the valve sleeve holes in the main cylinders all the way through in one setup. (ie: don't bore half of the cylinder and then flip the casting to bore the other side.)
