Boiler steel source

Post by Soot n' Cinders »

Does anybody know where I can get a small piece of 3/8" A516-70 steel plate near Atlanta? Ive been having a hard time finding it locally and dont want to pay the $125 shipping the supplier I found in Ohio wants for a 2'x4' piece.

Try Chapel Steel in Birmingham. In Portland, they sell to public (will call) and drops. Not sure about other locations.

Ryerson sells and stocks A516 Gr.70, at least that what their catalog states, you should be able to order and then pickup from them
Their number is 770-368-4200 they are in Norcross, 4400 Peacthtree Ind. blvd
Hope this helps

You can use A516-50, 60 or 70
The calculations were based on 50,000 tinsel strength

Thanks guys. Ill try Chapel and Ryerson. Their websites make it seem like they only sell full plates but Ill call and ask.

John, thanks. If I can get a hold of one of the other grades of 516, I'll take it. 70 just seems to be the most common variety

Tristan

Here is one of the suppliers I have used.

https://www.castlemetals.com/

The first thing to ask is do they have any drops?
Also you will need to know where you are going to ship it too.
It will be to heavy to ship to your house.

There have been thousands of boilers built with A-36 hot rolled flue sheets and there has never been a failure on record.

That may well be but if you can use a code steel why not?

These were the guys I used;
http://www.aasteel.com/

They had a 3x8' or so drop of SA-285 that weighted 300lbs. With shipping from TX to CT the total was $300. Shipping alone came in at $150. So they were really reasonable on drops and had a bunch of them for pressure vessel code steels.

If you can't get a drop, ask who they regularly sell to — perhaps that outfit would sell you a drop (which, for them, could be scrap).
