Old-style brake wheel in 1/8th scale

Post by Berne Ketchum »

I'm working on a project (CGW 110 caboose) that requires a couple of old-style brake wheels which have been difficult to find. I know they exist, because a friend gave me one, but I have no information on the manufacturer, or even when it was made, but guess it could have been 20 years ago. It appears to be a plastic injection molding. Does anyone know where I can find a couple of these, or something pretty close?

A friend of mine was making some of these in aluminum. Not sure if he has anymore. Is this to modern for you?

Berne,

I believe this is the wheel you want. I have them on my wood gondola and my newly restored P.E. caboose #1977 (actually modeled after PE #1975, but my daughter's birth year is 1977). Six spokes and exactly 1-3/4 inches in diameter. Cast bronze from Railroad Supply Corp. in New Hampshire. These particular wheels are originally from 1980, but I believe Mike still sells them. These wheels look exactly like the wheel you have posted. Lots of detail and the "old style". If you need a more detailed photo, I will take one.

Hi

You can check with Mike at Little Engines. He just purchased molds for 6 different brake wheels.

I don't remember who made them but I think the manufacture also made a plastic stake pocket. I think they are at least 20, maybe as many as 30 years old. I have a couple from an Ebay purchase several years ago, but sorry, no spares.

Berne Ketchum old style brake wheel.
I think pretty much they were made by Nelson Grey years ago. I have used what I had and Really like them for older model cars. They were black plastic. Don`t remember the scale (one inch??) I don`t care, I like them for 1-1/2 " cars and wish I had more. :-( chooch

Jeff Smith--Re: your site.
I found your site is OK, if you just put in Branchlineproducts.com I had it with the "Catalog page" included with the full name.
