If I were to re-make that back plate I would make the door even bigger, a half moon shape on the top to make it real easy to get to all parts of the fire. The best kind of door for ease of use is the scissors type double slide door but I don't quite have enough room to make that work easily, so I'll save it for the next engine.
Nb: By the way, are the tubes in your boiler rolled in or silver brazed?
They are welded steel. I believe they need to be welded to support the firebox in this particular marine boiler design. They are part of the structure. That could potentially change to rolled copper with enough supporting stays around the circle of the firebox. Consult a boiler engineer if making any changes to the design. Silver brazed tubes are typically only for copper boilers from what I have seen. The weakest of the three tube attachment types in my opinion.
