I have a 50 year old 1" 2-4-0 on my work bench that has a rigid rear axle, springs on the front (not equalized in any way) and tracks like nobody's business...all this with Southern Valve gear which is also sensitive to real axle position.
In many ways, it is suspended very similar to the Raritan (about the same vintage...)
