Last night, Tornado became the first steam locomotive in over 50 years to reach 100 mph on UK metals.

I showed this to my wife but she said it wasn't a real steam locomotive because it wasn't burning coal (I thought it was cool).

I guess then that all those early to mid-nineteenth century wood-burners were running on cosmic rays.John Hasler wrote:I showed this to my wife but she said it wasn't a real steam locomotive because it wasn't burning coal (I thought it was cool).

She remembers LIRR G5s's from her childhood on Long Island. My memories of steam are of hearing lake freighters blowing their ashes in the upper Saint Marys (they weren't supposed to do it there).BigDumbDinosaur wrote:I guess then that all those early to mid-nineteenth century wood-burners were running on cosmic rays.John Hasler wrote:I showed this to my wife but she said it wasn't a real steam locomotive because it wasn't burning coal (I thought it was cool).

For the 100 mph run they had a pair of firemen shoveling the coal to keep up. From the extended cut, it covered a bit more of the how they did it. OTOH I think it is very impressive that hand firing was keeping up with the burn rate. So the steam consumption for the speed is impressively low.
