Feed Water Pump
Feed Water Pump
My Duplex Feed Water Pump is leaking steam from the top pistons. What do I use to pack the nuts that hold the piston in? There is a nut on the top and bottom. Thanks, Ken

Probably couple if wraps of Teflon packing material.

Re: Feed Water Pump
I am not totally clear on 'nuts that hold the piston in'.
Are you speaking of the 5 or 6 nuts / bolts that hold the cover on or the large PACKING NUT on the PISTON ROD that is between the water and steam sections?
If the leak is on the head (5-6 nuts area), then you need either a new gasket or some sealant (or both).
If the leak is on the piston rod packing area, then the approach is different:
Piston rods can be packed with many different things - including Teflon (as mentioned), graphite tape or twine or O-rings.
Some of the PACKING NUTS are not actually adjustable. If there are O-RINGS on the rods, then some designs have 'packing nut looking' things that actually cannot be removed and the pump must be disassembled to put in new O-Rings.

Too many things going on to bother listing them.
Re: Feed Water Pump
I have it fixed. I used graphite twine on the large packing nuts. No more leaks.
