The face of K-4 #3855
The face of K-4 #3855
I have completed most of the work on the smokebox front for my 1.5" K-4. The front was machined from a cast iron disk and the door from steel. The handrail posts were manually machined on my craftsman lathe. I have no CNC so I ended up calculating approximately one hundred and fifty X and Y coordinates and using these to manually position the cross slide to produce the curved ball shape at the end of the handrail post.

Hi Dan
Question Did the prototype 3855 have those two small steps on the smoke box? I don't remember any K4 having them but anything is possible with a K4 they had many variations.

Beautiful, as were all Pennsy locomotive faces.

Very nice work, Dan !!
Re: The face of K-4 #3855
Thanks all for the compliments. Dave - the photo of the 3855 that I am using for my model does show the two small steps on the smokebox front. I have pictures of two additional prewar K-4s hanging in my shop that have the steps. As a note according to my reference sources the original 3855 rolled out of the Juniata shops in April 1923. I am hoping that my 3855 rolls out of the garage with all detailing completed by April 2023.

Hi Dan
I have the steps on my K41361 they are a bit different but they are there. The Pennsy did a lot of mixing and matching with locomotive components.
Your steps are more like the ones that were used on the E6. This is quite possible.
Also I modeled the 1940ies version and I know your making the earlier version as built. Your detail is looking just great. I'll be getting the headlight soon. That is my next project to finish and get on the market. The Pennsy used a 19inch headlight. I have the 16inh version available and I have made the larger and I'm working on the prototype. I have all the models and just need to assemble it.
I have posted a picture of the 1361 to show the steps. When your locomotives is finished it would be nice to get some pictures of the front ends together. It may be difficult as my locomotive is built to 7 1/4 but I'll figure something out.
