As we go into our holiday weekend celebrating the 4th of July, it may be time to review United States Flag Etiquette.
There will be lots of equipment running on tracks all over the country and many of them will have
a U.S. Flag mounted somewhere on a locomotive.
According to U.S. Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 7, b; “…When the flag is displayed on a motorcar,
the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.”
I’ll be the first to admit I’m guilty of having a U.S. Flag on my locomotive in the past mounted on the left side
which is incorrect according to the above mentioned. My U.S. Flag is now mounted on the front right,
and my State of Michigan flag is fastened to the front left side of the engine.
In doing a search of this topic here on chaski I found threads related to “track etiquette”, but nothing
related to the flag. Forgive me for being a [rivet counter] on the subject. Etiquette is about being polite,
and I’m hopeful that when one reads this message, it will have come across in such a manner.
And now, the term “Flag Etiquette” will be a permanent part of the board.
Thanks.
To a safe and fun holiday weekend for everyone!

Re: Flag Etiquette
John,
You're read loud and clear, you haven't mixed or minced words and we totally agree with you!
In this present time of "it's OK" to burn our Flag. My God; - where are we headed with that attitude.....?
Anyhow; no controversy and in good spirit - you're correct to say what you say. 100%
Most respectfully,

Re: Flag Etiquette
IF the reason to specify the RH fender on a car is to be on the curb side, then considering that trains run on the left track may be the rule should be reversed.

Re: Flag Etiquette
Nothing to do with the curb. ".. flag should always be to the observers left".
