Allen Mogul axle boxes?

Post by Fred_V »

I'm building a chassis for a guy and it will have needle brgs. There is no way to remove the brg. from the stepped hole in the axle box. The drawings show no notch or holes for a punch. Is this how you guys have built them.

Also the drawing shows the flange is cut straight with no relief at the upper and lower ends to allow for one wheel to move up or down without binding against the frame.

Any comments welcome.

yes on the notches to push the bearing out
yes on the angle relief to allow angular vertical movement
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I agree with Bill. Two small holes will save a lot of tears later.

You must have an older set of drawings. Gene added the two holes for removing the bearing at some point, the drawings now show them.
There is only a flange on one side; with the lateral clearance the box will tip just fine.

Thanks guys. I'll put the holes in there, easy enough and instruct the builder to allow enough lateral clearance. He is building an electric power Mogul so things are not quite as critical.

If the bearing is 'pressed' into the axle box, why do we need a stop?

most needle bearings get a light press fit and can, over time, especially in low frequency / rpm applications, work their way in / out.

I pressed mine in very lightly against a shoulder , then put a cover over the end to keep them from coming out. The cover was actually the face of the axlebox with the 'ears' on it - held in place with a couple of SHCS - is an easy way to make an axle box - start with square key stock.

probably belt and suspenders - but fooling with these bearings after-the-fact is a real PITA.

Thanks Bill, and thank you too Fred V for starting this discussion.... Now there will be a stop and retainers on these axle boxes - and holes to push the bearings out too!
