Injector

Post by Greg temp »

Hello everyone,
I am currently biulding a 7 1/4 inch guage 4-6-4 Hudson locomotive. I know it's easier to by a injector, but I was wanting to have a go at making one.
Does anyone here have or know where I can aquire a set of working drawings to machine from, any feed back will be muchly appreciated

Texts: "Minature Injectors inside and out" by D.A.G. Brown and "Locomotive Injectors" by 'The Inspector'.

The first book explains construction with many diagrams and drawings.

These are both currently available.

I've just had a look at the link you posted, after reading it(twice),it seems to me I could be spending a lot of time in my workshop and still not get it right,,,so the the question now is do I just buy one and know it's going to work,or make one or two or three and still not get it wright.
Thoughts please

Hi Greg

I know one person that made 4 and was able to get one to work.

Then there was the person that spent 3 or 4 years and never got it right.

It depends on why you are in the hobby. To build things or to run locomotives.

Hi Tim,
I've heard of guys making a few before they got one to work,,to answer your question I'm in the hobby to build things,I've made all my valves so far, nothing on my loco is of the shelf,
So to quote my grand dad (you don't learn anything if you don't try),

I think I'll give it a crack,,got nothing to loose

1. Buy one, install it and run.

2. Build one, or more if necessary to get one
to work. That way the pressure is off to get one
working for your build, plus you can put your
injector in once it's working, or plumb both sides
for injectors and install the bought one,
and keep the other side for your injector.

Just my two cents....

Do a search here. There has been at least one thread with a collection of injector article citations. In at least one article in ME, there was a fixture to test injectors under simulated conditions but not putting more water into the boiler. It sounded like a good idea to me.

Chapter 8 in "Miniature Injectors Inside and Out" is on testing injectors and has a design for a quite elaborate test device with pressure gauges and etc.

This is another avenue in the construction of the locomotive but part of the whole and it does sort-of detract from the main project. If the boiler for the locomotive is finished and available for testing the injector it is just another step but if a test boiler must be fabricated, that is far from and halts building the locomotive. Every side project will lead to something else to pursue.

This forum has had a number of interesting posts on injectors.... making a 'side step' into injector fabrication all the more enticing. I found and purchased the Australian book too... I had already built (not quite complete) an upright (Merryweather) boiler a few years ago that is large enough to do some testing - the loco construction is going to suffer.
