0-4-0 CAMELBACK ALTERNITIVES.

When I first re introduced the reading 0-4-0 Camelback a lot of comments where received that well it is a camelback(center cab) locomotive, alluding to the fact that it couldn’t be anything else.

My response was well you can use your imagination and do whatever you want, back cab or whatever else you can think up.

Yesterday I attended the New Jersey Live Steamers fall meet. I had an opportunity to photograph the locomotive pictured below. The builder NJLS member Herschel Robison purchased a set of castings years ago along with a boiler that I supplied him with. He added a lead and trailing truck by extending the frame front as well as the back to accommodate the trucks. The way I heard it from the current owner Doug Pyatt who added the larger cab and built the tender, making it into a larger I guess two foot gauge locomotive. It is a great running locomotive.

looks great, I often just smile at those that do not seem to understand the art of "kitbashing". there is nothing more challenging (and fun) then kitbashing a loco.

Someone in Florida has used Mercer 0-4-0 parts to make a 2-4-4-2 articulated. Looked really neat, and was a good use of the wheels, cylinders, valve gear, etc... The cylinders are large enough to use on an 0-6-0, Mogul, ten wheeler or small to mid-size consolidation if you wanted to go that route.

why not?

it is just wheels....

look at my 2-8-0 with cylinders the same size at these....

built a 2-8-0 with Raritan cylinders.....

That was ol' fender gigging me because my 2-10-0 started off it's life as a LE 0-4-0 in the early 1960s. Still has the 4 original drivers, cylinders, a few valve gear pieces, the four original axle boxes, and maybe the front and rear frame spreader and buffer beam. That's about all of the original 0-4-0 that's left on the locomotive.

I think the mercer 0-4-0 also would easily lend itself to being kitbashed into a larger wheel arrangement.

I’d like to see how the front end is set up on his engine. I have a similar engine and it steams poorly from start up to going around the Railroad.
