Mechanical Lubricator Ratchet Wheel
Mechanical Lubricator Ratchet Wheel
Dose anyone make the ratchet wheel for these pumps? I see plans for them on the site,I do not have the dividing head needed to cut my own .Any help finding this part would be great,I am going to use it on a lube pump for a 3/4 inch 4-8-4.

Re: Mechanical Lubricator Ratchet Wheel
Blackgates sells two different sizes of ratchet wheels as well as the entire lubricator, if that is what you need. Where do you run your 3/4" loco? Is this 3-1/2" gauge?

What size wheel do you need? LocoParts just received a batch 3/4" diameter ratchet wheels that have been wire EDM and hardened.

Also, I believe Kozo goes over how to make an entire lubricator, wheel included in his books.. And no dividing head needed...
Re: Mechanical Lubricator Ratchet Wheel
yes 3/4 scale is 3.50",I need a wheel that is 7/16 OD. 3/32 thick with 35 teeth and a 3/32 mounting hole. I am still building the engine, will finish in about 2 more years(Ihope) will run here in Cleveland area.

Re: Mechanical Lubricator Ratchet Wheel
Nice! is the 3-1/2" track a private one or a public/club track? Are there any 4-3/4" tracks in the Cleveland area? (Sorry to change the subject, just always looking for small scale tracks near me!)

David, The Lake Shore live steamers (east side of Cle) have a loop of ground track, and NEOLS has an elevated track as well (SSW of Cle) in Medina..Builder01 wrote:Nice! is the 3-1/2" track a private one or a public/club track? I'm in the Youngstown area, and model in 3/4" also.. Any private tracks up your way?

Thread Hijack - Sorry!
Hi John, I am in the Erie PA area. I belong the the Finger Lakes Live Steamers. They have an amazing 4-3/4" (1 inch scale) gauge ground layout. Sorry, no 3-1/2" gauge. I just got my steamer going this year and am always on the look out for 4-3/4" gauge tacks. No private tracks near me. The Cinder Sniffers (near Cincinnati) look like they have a pretty nice multi gauge track. Not sure if it includes 3-1/2" gauge. I know about the NEOLS, but, not the Lake Shore Live Steamers. Thank you!

squandt,
I've made a dozen or so of these over the years, a relatively easy job (so he sez) in the lathe by devising some kind of dividing wheel and detent stop. If you are someone with an Atlas lathe the dividing head is built into the headstock spindle bull gear. Otherwise a spur gear, or a drilled plate will do. The material was drill rod, and the teeth were cut with a shaped tool bit which was pushed along the rod by traversing the saddle. Once the teeth were finished the ratchet blank was center drilled and cut off, then hardened and quenched, and was ready to go.

Re: Mechanical Lubricator Ratchet Wheel
you don't need a dividing head...you can make them using a SPINDEX fixture and a dovetail cutter.
when you make - make a 'stick' of over an 1" long so that you have several for the future.

Too many things going on to bother listing them.
