Worthington pump?

I am adding a steam-drive pump to my 1-1/2 scale American and I would LOVE to build/buy a small Worthington style pump. (EVERYBODY has VanBrocklin style duplex pumps!)

Cole's Power Models used to sell a small Worthington and from what I have seen they work very well but Cole's is long since out of business.

Does anybody know of a supplier who still offers small Worthington castings, plans, or anything else?

I'll design from scratch if I have to but it would be easier to have something to go by.

Thanks gang!

Hi Dianne

I have a set of castings you can have. You will need to find a set of drawings.

Dianne,
Best substitute I have been able to find for the Coles pump kit was Southworth Engines Duplex. The plans don't do much good for the Worthington kit but they are available. The Duplex action is via porting rather than external linkage - although that could be modified but kits are available and quite nice I might add 'cause I bought the 6" on a while back. They seem to arrive from GrBritian as quickly as from anyplace in the US....

Yes, I have been looking at Southworth. Their price is pretty good and they are a possibility. The Southworth 4" is small enough to not look too out of place on my American but I do prefer the look of the Cole's Worthington.

(I have a nice, original, Robert's "water motor" that makes a beautiful steam pump but it is bigger than my engine!)

Bob Potter of Southworth Engines said in his dry British humor - "folks will be watching the Southworth Duplex Pump in action at the expense of your steam locomotive" - might be right.... The external linkage sort-of takes away since the Worthington is much simpler, and effective rather than the porting complexity.

The concern with the horizontal duplex pump is -> where do you put it? Consider the length and width

if you want to go that way and cannot find plans, you can take the BvB pump, lay it on it's side and.....

I have plans for the Cole's Worthington that I could have photocopied then mail you. The price would be the photo coping cost plus postage. If interested get in touch with a private message.

you can not lay the V.B pump on its side. It must be vertical, so the checks work on the pumping end.

Here is a photo of the fabricated pump from my William Harris Shay:

It is real joy to watch operate.

That's a nice pump. What are the dimensions?
