Eccentric Engineer - Product Update 11/30

Hi everyone,

Wanted to give a brief update on the happenings at EE.

Small Scale Injectors
Due to the overwhelming interest in the small scale injectors, I’ve decided to delay the delivery of the Nathan 1921 starter valve to make a large batch of these injectors before the end of the year. Currently it’s still looking possible that the small injectors will be available by the end of the year, but worst case will be early January.

Nathan 1921 Starting Valve
As mentioned, delivery is delayed for the small injectors, but they will take priority once the small injectors are completed. Expect to see them for sale January/February.

Standard Injectors
One of my customers made an effort to find the limits of the Standard Injectors, and I’d like to share some of his findings:
- Maximum feed water temperature is around 120°. Operation at this temp is poor but it does deliver water. Delivers hot water more effectively at higher pressure.
- Tested sucessfully up to 175psi, which was the limit of his test boiler

At the moment I only have 2 standard injectors left in stock. I have about 50-60 more bodies that just require one more machining operation, and the internals for these are complete. These will be completed after the starter valves.

Nathan 1918A Injectors
A handful of waxes have been sent to the foundry to ensure they cast well. The detail came out so nicely on the waxes that I’m really looking forward to offering these injectors.

As I wrote at the time of your first announcement of your small injector: I'm very much interested. Just let me know when and how much and I'll get the payment to you.

I recall there was some debate about the maximum operating pressure whether it should be 100 or 125 psi. How did that sort out? I would like 125 psi for my use.

I tested the injector to 125psi and it worked flawlessly. I still have work to do on the low end to get it down to around 30psi. The smallest adjustments have a big impact on the low end of the operating range so it will take just a little trial and error to get it down where I want it.

30 to 125 would be pretty spectacular performance. I'm going to be happy with 50 to 125, I'll hand-pump below 50 as punishment for my poor firing.

It’s a 15-20 minute drive, but my “real job” is in Menlo Park, so my shop is only a few minutes from work.

I grew up in Los Altos near Loyola Corners, 2 blocks from the SP branch line, now long gone.
My Father worked at Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park. Tweaking my brain cells here...

What is the status of your small scale injector? I'm anxious to get one of these as soon as they are available so I can get it plumbed in and ready for the 2018 season as soon as the weather breaks.

Currently my best estimate is end of this month or very early February. The end is in sight but it's taking longer than I had hoped.

A number of people have expressed concern about missing out on this batch, but there's no need to worry. I'm making a lot of them. Over 200. I expect to have inventory for several months.

Previously I announced that I would provide couplings for use with 1/4" tubing, but I've decide instead to make two different style fittings. The couplings added quite a bit of extra work to the install, and now the workload is the same whether you're installing 3/16" or 1/4".
3/16" tubing slips into the fitting to be soldered.

1/4" tubing slips on around the outside of the fitting to be soldered.
1/4" tubing slips on around the outside of the fitting to be soldered.


I have made plenty of extra nuts, pipe connection fittings, and cones for replacement parts. These will be made available for purchase at the same time as the finished injectors.

I sincerely appreciate everyone's patience. There were a few delays (the holiday season, the unexpected flu, exceptionally busy at work), but making this large quantity is also simply taking longer than I anticipated. Nonetheless there is light at the end of the tunnel!
