Post by Marty_Knox »

We are building a Belpaire Boiler for a 1.5" scale PRR G-5. Here are some pictures.

One unusual feature of Pennsy boilers is the injectors are on the backhead, with internal feed lines to carry the water to the front of he boiler. This shows the brackets to support those internal feed lines.

The flat side surfaces above the crown sheet need stays. They go above the crown sheet across to the other side. The challenge is making sure the stays going in 3 different directions don't intersect.

Here are some pictures of the inner firebox. The sides and top were formed from one piece of 5/16" PVQ plate, with the rear tube sheet and door sheet welded in.

Nice work Marty, I have completed chassis for an LMS Black 5 (highlander, 1.5" scale, 7.5" gauge) that needs a bel pair boiler. Martin Evans design and I have the drawings. Are you able to give me an approx. quote for this boiler? Non superheated. Feel free to PM me if you would like. Thank you. Mike

Marty:
Inspiring to see your work.
I like the looks of the Belpaire boilers, living in former Great Northern RR territory. Added complexity to construct, though.
Thanks for sharing.

That looks difficult Marty, but probably not any more than anything else you guys do. Since the injectors are on the backhead for PRR locos, what's the check valve arrangement? I'm assuming there would be some, also somewhere around the backhead?

In this case, the injectors are along the outside of the firebox and toward the rear.. The check valves are on the backhead..

Marty,
Amazing work!
Thank you for posting the steps of your building process, which is straight forward as with other boilers you built.
Just professional steel work and welding! It is prone to work safely for lots of years to come.
