...I'd suggest contacting Ken Schroeder in Gardnerville, NV. Sorry, don't have contact info readily available. Ken sells various shay castings...think in 1.5/1.6 as well as 2.5" scales. Don't know if he still does contract build projects. Carl B.

That shay looks to be 3.75 scale.

Fred, thats an Ikon Engineering Shay(link has been corrected). It is 3.75" scale. I believe they still make them, but they are in New Zealand so shipping would be expensive on top of how ever much they want to build the shay.
I dont know of any 3.75" scale shay kits out there, the few shays that size I know of have all been custom built either entirely out of bar stock or using Cole's Case steam tractor cylinders.

Hi Fred,
Although I'm not sure of its current whereabouts, and without wishing to hijack your post, below are some pictures from 1985 of a very similar Shay in the UK (7.25" gauge) that I used to drive. I'm driving the loco in the black and white picture below the title, Geoff Billington (who some may know) is driving on the cover. I was heavily involved with Uckfield MRC 'back in the day' and still have ties back to the club and good friends.
Pete's Shay 'Blackhawk' was a magnificent beast, made even more so because it could be converted to a paddle steamer. He would remove the cab, unpin the trucks from the frame, hoist the entire loco as a single unit into the air and then drop it into his homemade boat. Hooking up the Cardan shafts to the paddle drive, off he went!
Good luck to your friend,
Steve

Tristan,
Alas, Ikon Engineering has closed down their model engineering line and sold off all their equipment. I spoke with the owner a few months ago to inquire about castings and was surprised to learn there were never any patterns or castings - all their work was fabricated and turned. In any event, the passing of an era...
However, They will sell plans sets. So i suppose it is still be possible to build a new Ikon loco from their plans.
