Bicycle cables are meant to pull and not to push. They may work OK pushing against something that does not have a lot of resistance, but you may want to use a return spring on the actuating lever of what you are moving.

Well, it did work just fine for the application at the time. Never had a problem with it. The run was very short and everything was pretty stiff, so it didn't have a chance to bend around in ways that weren't intended.

Morse cables are great, but a couple of cravats: they do not bend through tight radius- you will need maybe 3” to 4” radius, depending on cable diameter. Second cravat - they often are made to order, so,often you need a fairly precise length measurement. But they work very smoothly, in both directions.

Although, Might be better to look into old fashioned 1/8” diameter shielded, solid wire engine shutoff cable.

Another option, if you want to use bicycle cable and find that it doesn't have enough push ability is to use two cables. one that pulls open and one that pulls closed. Connect them to opposite sides of your control lever.

You could use a piece of music wire run through a bicycle cable sleeve. Some bike cable sleeves are teflon lined, which would help.
