Passing of Doug Van Veelen

Post by mspetersen »

Saw this over on the Narrow Gauge list but I know Doug was a contributor here as well and I hadn't seen anyone mention it here. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituar ... en-7790251

This is sad news. Doug was a member of the original North Georgia Live Steamers (1980s-1990s) in Duluth, GA, and was an authority on the Gainesville Midland railroad.

Mark,

Thank you for posting the notice. Very sad to hear but not surprising. I had helped proof read all three of his books. I know he was not in the best of health. Still sad to hear.

Well, I tried to find a photo to share, but came to realize all my pics of Doug, I and his projects are 35mm. I was at GaTech back then and can remember a few weekends we worked on DRG Narrow Gauge box cars. Aspirations to build a dozen; I only two were finished. I do remember taking one over to Wayne's place one time.

Doug was one of the first persons I met at NGLS; running Don's 2-6-2.

There was a lot of projects.
Doug took an atlas lathe CNCed it; gonna need it for all those wheels... :-)
Doug was a civil engineer and he and Wayne and I shot and cut the main on the NGLS back stretch by the shed. But that's another story.
A few projects ended up in my shop when they got to big and heavy.
When I last saw him a year or two ago he was building Gallows turntable model or something similar. Narrow gauge to the end.

My good friend Doug, you will be missed.

Just a small 4.75 gauge 0-4-0 that Doug gave me. There came a time when he had to let go of some of the heavier projects and so I inherited this and another 4.75 2-6-2 chassis and a partial Clishay. Sold the water tube boilers and Crab to make some $ for him.

I think these other projects are on the list somewhere... :-P

The 2-6-2 I am really looking forward to. It is a 1.5 narrow gauge. That Sorta resembles EBT #11 which I suspect is why he had it. Hoping to get a boiler made and get up to St Croix someday. It has a gorgeous tender.
